It’s been several years since I’ve worked with wire, and I must say that I’m enjoying it immensely. My main focus is getting my wrapped wire uniform. It took a while; however, I’m happy to say that my skills in basic wire weaving are slowly improving.
As shown in the above picture, purchasing a magnifying lamp to check how neat my wire wrapping was was extremely helpful. Once I made that investment, it improved my technique significantly. My fascination with creating with wire led me back to wire-wrapped jewelry, and I was also looking for a creative outlet that would allow me to destress. I knit, sew, weave, and spin; however, I wanted to do something besides those things.
While I’ve mainly focused on wrapping wire, primarily copper, I have made a few jewelry items.
They have all been rings, and while I’m not happy with them, my daughter took most of the sample silver rings I’ve created.
I told her they would be much better if she waited; however, she wasn’t taken no for an answer, and the top drawer of my rolling jewelry cabinet is dedicated to sample pieces I’ve created.
This past December, I started rock tumbling. I realized wire wrapping is the perfect vessel for showcasing some of my beautifully tumbled rocks, so it was time to step up my wire wrapping game. However, I worked with wire many years ago, and getting back into it was not like the saying, “riding a bike.” I have no complaints; I have enjoyed relearning this craft, picking up new techniques, buying new equipment, and discovering some very talented online teachers that I’ve found extremely helpful along my journey back into creating with wire.
